Average Velocity

The depth divided by the travel time of a wave to that depth. Average velocity is commonly calculated by assuming a vertical path, parallel layers and straight ray path, conditions that are quite idealized compared to those actually found in the Earth.

 

Average velocity may be computed from interval velocity by the following formula:

where Vi is the interval velocity of the ith interval and Dti is the two way travel time through the ith interval.
