Business Associate - Sample Business Associate Aliases

A business associate may have multiple identifiers or aliases. For example, a citizen of the United States has a social security number and may also have a drivers license with a unique number. A company may be assigned a unique identifier called a DUNS Number by Dun and Bradstreet. If it is a publicly traded company it will also have a stock ticker symbol. To provide flexibility in defining these alternative identifiers for business associates, a table called BA_Alias was created. Several reference tables support the BA_Alias table: R_BA_Alias_Source contains a list of the sources for aliases, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as a source for stock ticker symbols; R_BA_Alias contains the definition of the aliases themselves such as the ticker symbol or social security number; and R_Valid_BA_Alias_Source contains the valid combinations of sources and aliases, for example, social security numbers are provided by the Social Security Administration. The following are samples of stock ticker symbols (whose source is the New York Stock Exchange) as aliases for the sample companies.

Business Associate Sample Business Associate Associations Company Hierarchies

A business associate may have different types of relationships with other business associates. For example, several business associates may form a partnership to fund the purchase of a lease and subsequent exploration and drilling. Associations can also be used to express a business hierarchy with subsidiaries. The following samples include: Halliburton is the sole owner of Sperry-Sun Drilling Services and Conoco Phillips is the sole owner of Conoco Norway. Conoco Phillips is part owner (31.3%) of Duke Energy Field Services along with Duke Energy, which owns 69.7%. In each case the reverse relationship is also shown, e.g., that Duke Energy Field Services is a subsidiary of both Conoco Phillips and Duke Energy.
