This section will discuss the drill target domain and provide introductory information for the reader. This domain introduction is provided so that the reader will be familiarized with the basic concepts of a drill target in order to understand and use the drill target section of the data model. This is not an exhaustive introduction. References to more complete domain information will be provided.
The first step in planning a borehole is to define the objectives. A directional well can have one or more objectives. The most obvious objective is the target. These can be geological features such as faults or pinch-outs, other boreholes (as in relief well drilling), or any combination of these.
A target is defined as being a shape in three-dimensional space with a reference point. It is expressed in terms of a particular coordinate system and may describe the geologic feature that it represents.
