Drill Target
The first step in planning any well is to define the objectives. A directional well can have one or more objectives. The most obvious of the objectives is the target. These can be geological structures, geological features such as faults or pinch-outs, other wellbores (as in relief well drilling), or a combination of these.
In the simplest situation while drilling a borehole, a directional driller knows the surface location of a borehole and has a single drill target where the borehole should complete. In more complex situations, the directional driller may have several targets that the borehole designer wants him to hit as he drills towards the bottom hole target.
A target is defined as a shape in 3 dimensional space with a reference point. It is expressed in terms of a particular coordinate system and may describe the geologic feature that it represents. |
