Casing is run to protect or isolate formations adjacent to the wellbore.

A device that turns a reduction in gas pressure into useful work - usually used to power a pump or compressor. This reduction in pressure and its associated reduction in temperature also allow an expander to be used as a gas expander.

Facility

A facility denotes a business function, service, or equipment setup that facilitates any operation related to production, processing, development, and/or transportation of materials. Examples of facilities are steam generator, pipeline, gathering facility, storage facility, tank, well completion, truck, etc.

Facility_Alias

An alternate way to identify a facility. A facility can have many alias names at a given point in time; and can have many alias names over time.

Facility_Composition

An association denoting that one facility is a part of another facility. One facility can be composed of many other facilities, sequentially and simultaneously. An example of a facility composition is a well completion facility that is composed of a physical assembly of downhole tubulars and equipment.

An association denoting that one facility is connected to another. The entire list of facility connections is what will comprise the physical network.

Facility_Status

An association that denotes the historical associations between facilities and their statuses. At a given point in time, a facility can have multiple statuses, but only one status from a given status category (for example, one regulatory status and one operational status). A facility can have many statuses over time. A change of status can be triggered by the start or completion of an activity or an event taking place.

Fiber

Strands of optically pure glass as thin as a human hair that carry digital information over long distances. These fibers are lowered into the borehole to measure Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) values.

Gathering_System

The flowline network and process facilities that transport and control the flow of oil or gas from the wells to a main storage facility, processing plant or shipping point. A gathering system includes pumps, headers, separators, emulsion treaters, tanks, regulators, compressors, dehydrators, valves and associated equipment. (Oilfield Glossary)

The various thresholds that can be defined for a measurement tag. This is primarily done for surveillance purposes. The actual values of the tag will be compared to these thresholds, and an appropriate alarm can be raised if the actual values are outside of these thresholds. Example values are: High PI Limit, Low PI Limit, etc. This can also define the expected curve for a tag.

PD_Meter

Positive Displacement (PD) meters measure the volumetric flow rate of a liquid or gas by separating the flow stream into known volumes and counting them over time. Gears, pistons, vanes, or diaphragms are used to separate the fluid. These meters provide good to excellent accuracy, and are one of only a few technologies that can be used to measure viscous liquids.

For example, tank strapping tables commonly chart the capacity volume in increments of 1/4 inch from the bottom to the top of the tank. Therefore, there will be an entry in the strapping table for each 1/4 inch increment of height in the tank.
