Facility Inheritance

A facility is defined as being a piece of equipment, a collection of pieces of equipment, or a role that a piece of equipment plays. For example a valve is a facility as is a BOP, which is composed of valves.

There is typically a lot of confusion in distinguishing a facility from an equipment object. To simplify the usage of facility and equipment objects in the Seabed model, there are two concepts to describe their usage. The first is that of an abstract object to represent the concept of the role and its state of permanence over the life of the asset (facility). The second is that of a physical and time bound object (tracked facility).

You can see and understand the concept of a facility utilized over the life of an asset, but can only touch the physical equipment (tracked facility) installed at a given point in time. Facility is permanently installed and it represents a business function, service, or role (for example Well_Completion) provided by equipment items and materials.
